Royal Servant

The theme of fulfillment is prominent in Matthew’s gospel. The promises of God are fulfilled in Jesus of Nazareth, the Son of God sent to redeem Israel and rule the nations. Peter, for example, on the road to Jerusalem confirmed that he was the “Messiah.” Nevertheless, he failed to understand that he would accomplish that calling as the suffering “Servant of the LORD.”

First Disciples

Disciples of Jesus are called to leave everything behind, if need be, and to dedicate their entire lives to his mission of proclaiming the Gospel throughout the Earth. Though the story as recorded in the synoptic gospels is brief, we begin to glimpse the true cost of discipleship. Jesus began building his new community in “Galilee of the Nations” by inviting four fishermen to leave their livelihoods and follow him “on the way” which would lead to his death in Jerusalem.

His Kingdom

When Jesus first appeared in Galilee, he proclaimed the “Kingdom of God” – “Repent, for the kingdom is at hand.” In his ministry, God’s reign began to invade the Earth. But his realm was of an entirely different nature to the political systems of this world. On more than one occasion, he refused THAT kind of political power, especially when it was offered by Satan who tempted him with rulership over “all the kingdoms of the world.”

Light of the World

According to John, “Life” is found in the “Word,” and that life is the “Light of men.” It is “shining in the darkness,” and the darkness “cannot seize” or suppress it. This same “Word” or Logos has become “flesh,” the Living Word of God manifested and expressed in Jesus of Nazareth. In him, the Glory and the Life of the God who created all things are illuminated for all men to behold.
